One thing I’ve been thinking a lot about lately is what local community is going to look like a decade from now. Our kids are now 7 and 9, and I’m watching the country become more and more divided before our very eyes.
For my part, I’m trying to be a part of the solution by running for our local City Council - I’ve never run for political office before - and this is fairly small stakes (I live in a city with 20k residents). Watching our democratic process at work has been an immense education - local elections basically decide the futures of our cities (and are more profound than you might think).
Equally important seems to be the social media we consume. Citizen, Facebook Groups and Nextdoor have an immense amount of influence over how we perceive our local communities.
This is going to be a brief post - but I have an important question - would you join a local online community - an alternative to the existing options - where politics and crime updates are not discussed?
I am seeing more and more interesting companies in this space, and I’m curious as to whether they can shape our future in a positive way. I hope they can.
Yes, i have joined a couple of FB based groups and they are very useful at times (along with junk posts and hundreds of unemployed comedians proving why they never made it in comedy).
